In-person on-demand session
New Language, New Era in Shipbuilding
ABOUT THE SESSION
Jin-Hyung Park, Principal Researcher at the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding, to the Oil & Gas Digital Transformation Conference 2025. Jin-Hyung earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington, specializing in pipe auto-routing using expert systems. After returning to Korea, he joined Samsung Heavy Industries, where he played a key role in advancing design automation, production automation, smart factories, and digital transformation in shipbuilding. In 2024, he joined the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding, where he now leads the development of digital platforms that enhance collaboration between shipyards and partner companies. He is all set to share his views on "New Language, New Era in Shipbuilding," exploring how digital innovation is reshaping the future of the industry.
He will share his views on the significant shift taking place in the shipbuilding industry, where traditional 2D drawings—long used as the primary means of communication across the shipbuilding lifecycle—are being replaced by more advanced, integrated solutions. As the industry embraces a “Single Source of Truth” approach, 3D models are emerging as the new standard for communication, enabling more accurate visualization, better decision-making, and streamlined collaboration. Government-led initiatives are also playing a crucial role in promoting this transformation by encouraging the adoption of 3D technologies to enhance synergy between shipyards and their partner companies. This presentation will explore how the “language” of shipbuilding is evolving, with 3D models not only modernizing workflows but also becoming the central hub of design and operational communication. As digital transformation gains momentum, this shift represents a new era in shipbuilding—one that is more collaborative, efficient, and future-ready.
Key Topics-
1. Traditionally, 2D drawings have been the primary means of communication throughout the shipbuilding lifecycle.
2. However, the industry is shifting toward a "Single Source of Truth" approach, where 3D models are becoming the central medium of communication.
3. Government-led initiatives are also promoting the use of 3D models to enhance collaboration between shipyards and partner companies.
4. This presentation highlights how the "language" of shipbuilding is evolving from 2D drawings to 3D models.
